Norman Lewis: A Retrospective

October 12 – November 19, 1976
CUNY Graduate Center, New York · Mall and 18th Floor
Curated by Thomas Lawson

In late 1975 Dr Milton Brown, the Chair of Art History at CUNY Graduate Center (where I was a newly enrolled student), invited me to take over a planned exhibition of paintings by Norman Lewis, a then-forgotten, now revered New York artist. Over the following months I spent time with Norman at his Grand Street studio, talking about art, life, and politics. I wrote a mostly biographical essay and, along with Norman and Dr Brown, selected the paintings. Following the show I was hired as an exhibition assistant at the gallery, The Graduate Center Mall Gallery, and worked there for several years.
