The British Art Show

1994 - 1995

The British Art Show is a peculiarly British event, a survey exhibition mounted every five years, organized by the Southbank Centre in London, but presented in several venues around the country, and not in the capital. I was invited to join Rose Finn-Kelcey and Richard Cork as selectors of British Art Show 4, presented in Manchester, Edinburgh, and Cardiff in 1995 and 1996. The previous version had included over 100 artists, so we quickly decided to limit our selection to twenty or twenty-five. For about a year I traveled to London once a month to make studio visits and confer with my co-selectors. It was an exciting moment, with an entire generation, both in London and Glasgow, coming into their own. It was a strong show, somehow not adequately recognized.
