This project began as a research grant from the Getty as part of their first Pacific Standard Time exploration of art in Los Angeles; the grant was to support a two year sequence of classes to be co-taught by Stacey Allen, my co-editor at East of Borneo, Clara Kim, the curator at Redcat, and me. We started with a very open idea to look at various ways of understanding the history of art production in Los Angeles as a series of experiments, in form, materials, function. As the class developed the students became more and more focused on how this played out in the development of various artist-run spaces, including the Art School and the Design School at CalArts, in the 70s. The final result was an exhibition of archival materials, oral history interviews and pull quotes, with the interactive archive we had developed at East of Borneo functioning as a dynamic catalogue.
