Pat Douthewaite

1973

Los Angeles had long been known for its high-powered art schools, but for decades students moved to New York as soon as they graduated. This began to change In the first part of the 90s; artists stayed, and a new crop of galleries like Blum&Poe opened to support them. In the summer of 1996, I proposed bringing some of the work these determinedly Los Angeles based artists were doing to New York’s Artists Space. The show opened the following winter, and included Julie Becker, Andrea Bowers, Dave Muller, Laura Owens, Marina Rosenfeld, and Kent Young. It was no coincidence that I had worked with all of them while they were at CalArts.
