Dissent - What they fear is the light
2016
In early 2016, Sarah Russin, the director of LACE, invited me to browse the gallery’s archive, with a view to making a show reflecting on what I might find. I was soon attracted to an exhibit from 1987, curated by Brenda Miller and Deborah Irmas, that took a look at how artists were responding to the then new video surveillance technologies. I partnered with curator Shoghig Halajian to develop an updated version, one that would explore a range of questions around privacy and control in a world in which we find ourselves under constant surveillance, and yet participate by over-sharing personal information on social media. The artists we invited to participate were; Laura Aguila, Barbara Ess, Coco Fusco, Juliana Huxtable, Metahaven, Carlos Motta, MP A, Sondra Perry, Christine Rebet, and Jimena Sarno.
