An Escape Towards Liberty tells of Muir’s escape from Botany Bay across the Pacific on board an American trader, and his delivery into the hands of the Spanish authorities in California. As before, the text is a hybrid account, here based on the diaries of a French seaman, the official correspondence of the Mexican governorship, and some personal letters written by Muir himself. In this segment Muir encounters a variety of political regimes, from the tribal to the colonial, all the while railing against the tyranny of the current power structure in Britain.
